From The Pastor’s Desk:

Tongue-Tied

21The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.  Proverbs 18:21

18But the things that come out of a person’s mouth come from the heart, and these defile them.
Matthew 15:18

The words we speak have a lot of power. They also reveal much about what is going on inside of our hearts. Jesus said that our words are like a window into our souls.

Beginning on August 17 we are going to begin taking a look at what the Bible says about the words that we use. We are going to consider various “sins of the tongue”--why they are a problem and how we can turn to Jesus to heal our speech.

The emojis at the top of the page are meant to represent the things we will be considering. After an introductory sermon from James 3 on “Taming the Tongue”, our schedule looks like this:

  • August 24: we will look at the problem of grumbling. As the Israelites left Egypt they couldn’t stop complaining, and it led to 40 years of wandering in the desert. How can we fight against a grumbling spirit?

  • August 31: we will look at the problem of swearing. We all know that we are not supposed to use bad words, but do we know why? It’s one of the easiest sins to spot, but is it the worst?

  • September 7: we will look at the problem of gossip. Everybody loves a juicy tidbit of news about somebody else, whether it’s a celebrity or just the neighbor down the street. But we all know that if someone says “I probably shouldn’t be telling you this…” they really shouldn’t. How can we win the war of the wagging tongue?

  • September 14: we will look at the problem of angry discourse. Everybody has a hot take, and everybody seems inclined to share it as loudly as possible. Our culture–and especially our social media outlets–are dominated by outrage. How can we turn down the temperature?

  • September 21: we will look at the problem of dishonesty. Pinocchio got in trouble for lying, and we all know how easy it is for untrue things to pass from our lips. Why is honesty so important, and how can we train ourselves to speak the truth?

  • September 28: we will end the series by considering the ways we can use our words to honor others and build them up. Rather than be people whose words hurt, we want to be people who speak life.

I believe this is an important topic that Christians do not always think very much about. I am looking forward to preparing these messages and I hope you will make it a priority to hear them.
